CUHK-Shenzhen SME Successfully Concludes 2026 Undergraduate Graduation Ceremony
The School of Management and Economics (SME), The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, held the SME Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2026 Bachelor's Degree Graduates at Liwen Hall on May 17. Around 1,500 graduates, parents, family members, friends, faculty, and staff attended the ceremony to celebrate the Class of 2026 as they completed their undergraduate studies and prepared to begin a new chapter.
Former President and Ralph and Claire Landau Professor of Economics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Chairman of the Board of the Shenzhen Finance Institute, Lawrence Lau, delivered the keynote speech. Vice President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Professor Shu Tao, together with SME faculty members, also attended the ceremony, joining graduates and their families in witnessing this solemn and heartwarming occasion.
At the opening of the ceremony, the Executive Dean of SME, Professor Zhang Bohui, congratulated the graduates on reaching this important milestone. He noted that SME had grown together with its students over the past four years. As the School marked its 12th anniversary, SME entered the UTD Top 100 Worldwide Business School Rankings, and hold a leading position in Chinese mainland. The students, he noted, had not only witnessed the School’s development, but had also been an integral part of its progress. Looking ahead, he encouraged the graduates to maintain a global mindset, embrace setbacks as opportunities to try again, and focus on building sustainable value in solving real-world problems.
In the keynote speech, Professor Lawrence Lau said that in the United States, a graduation ceremony is known as “commencement.” It signifies the beginning of a new phase of life — one of adventure and advancement — for graduates. As the graduates go forth into the real world, he spoke to them briefly about three things: first, whether their specialization is finance or not, they should always remember that the ultimate purpose of finance is to support the real economy; second, they should realize that not all financial instruments are socially productive; and third, as professionals in management and economics, they need to master artificial intelligence and ensure that it serves as their tool, and not the other way around.
The ceremony also included the presentation of Outstanding Graduate Awards. Professor Shu Tao, Vice President of CUHK-Shenzhen, and Professor Tong Shilu, Associate Dean of SME, presented awards to outstanding SME graduates in recognition of their academic achievements, personal growth, and overall development. Several SME students also received Outstanding Graduate Awards from the University and their colleges.
Speaking on behalf of the Class of 2026, Aurelia Wetzel Mawardi, an outstanding graduate representative and international student from Indonesia, reflected on her four years at SME. She said the experience went far beyond lectures and exams, as students were encouraged to lead, collaborate, stay curious, and step outside their comfort zones. She thanked the faculty for challenging students “to think bigger and ask better questions,” and encouraged her peers to face uncertainty with confidence.
During the “Awarding of Graduation Letters” session, hosted by Professor Wen Zhang, Assistant Dean of SME, graduates came to the stage by major to shake hands with faculty representatives, receive a letter prepared by the School, and take commemorative photos. The session marked a symbolic farewell and carried SME’s best wishes for the graduates’ future journeys.
In the “Final Lecture” session, Professor Hongqi Liu reflected warmly on the graduates’ four-year university journey, highlighting resilience and relationships as two essential qualities for a meaningful life. She encouraged students to keep learning, stand up after setbacks, and cherish their families, friends, and loved ones. She also thanked parents for their years of support and closed with a heartfelt message: “Wherever you go, however far, remember this: you are always welcome home.”
With applause, photos, embraces, and farewells, the SME Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2026 Bachelor's Degree Graduates came to a close. As the Class of 2026 moves forward, SME extends its best wishes to all graduates as they carry their knowledge, vision, courage, and sense of responsibility into the wider world.
