Eliminations began in dramatic fashion on Day Two of the World Match Racing Tour Final, as light and variable conditions on the racecourse delivered one of the biggest shake-ups of the event so far.

After a breezier opening day in 12–18 knots, the wind eased significantly to 8–10 knots, placing a premium on precision boat handling and flawless decision-making. While the pre-starts remained intensely close and competitive, the lighter conditions proved unforgiving, with even the smallest mistakes quickly punished.

By the end of the day, both qualifying round robins were complete, the repechage line-up was set, and two teams saw their campaigns come to an early end. In a major surprise, two of the highest-ranked skippers entering the Final were eliminated: Jonnie Berntsson (SWE), ranked world No. 3, and Ian Garreta, ranked #4. The result sent shockwaves through the fleet, particularly given Berntsson’s recent victory at the prestigious Bermuda Gold Cup.

The remaining competitors will now face a repechage round, where only the top two teams will advance to join the quarterfinalists — setting the stage for another high-stakes battle as the event moves deeper into its elimination phase.

Among the standout performers of the day was French skipper Timothée Rossi, who was involved in several razor-thin matches, consistently thriving in the tricky conditions. His form, along with the strong showing from several younger crews near the top of the standings, has sparked conversation around a possible changing of the guard in elite match racing.

With top seeds already out and emerging talent rising fast, one thing is clear: the 2025 WMRT Final is delivering surprises at every turn as the fleet heads into the knockout rounds.
